It's electronic drums played through a PA and treated like an acoustic drum kit with controls for console processing, and various things supply snare buzz/sympathetic resonance such as a box of paper clips. I really like Soniccouture's Electro-Acoustic, which runs in Kontakt Player. Of note Microtonic can upload kits to the Teenage Engineering PO-32, and has an online "patternarium" where people share drum patterns. Then there are actual drum machines, too many to list. If you have a controller with a 4x4 grid of pads it's a lot of fun programming beats like J Dilla. If you're familiar with that or open to learning it, it's a loop-based style of production.

For free there's Sitala, which is one of two plugins that automatically put the pad name into the REAPER piano roll (Geist 2 is the other one).Īnother option is the free MPC Beats, which is based entirely on the MPC-style workflow. There's also Xfer Nerve which has a demo. Some people like Atlas which is more like a drum rack where the AI is secondary and they are still working on a sequencer last I heard. However, you can drag the sequences out as MIDI and drag the kit you made into Battery or Geist or whatever else will take it. The downside is that it's only got those 8 slots so you'll need another instance if you want more. If you want something that organizes drum samples for you, XLN XO is the king, and it's got 8 sample slots with nice processing options and fantastic sequencing. It's got a quick workflow and good processing FX and sampler-like behavior tuned for drums. There's a demo available.įor something simpler I prefer Battery 4, which is a MIDI drum rack. I don't know what the maximum length is, it's something past 3000 patterns. You can build scenes composed of patterns from each engine, you have 6 banks of 16, which are also MIDI triggerable. You've got 24 patterns per engine which are MIDI-triggerable. It has a powerful pattern-based sequencer, each pad lane has independent length, FX parameters can be modulated, hits can be reversed and probability-based. Each layer has envelopes and shaping options and 6 FX slots and share 4 send FX, each pad has 6 FX slots and share 4 send FX, each engine has 6 FX slots and share 4 send FX. It's like Inception, you've got 8 layers per pad, 64 pads per engine, and 8 engines. It's obviously not as full-featured as the flagship product.įor drum machines, nothing beats Geist 2. The same company has another product called EZ Drummer which has a demo available. Like BFD3, the drums are recorded very well (by George Massenburg) but you need to mix them yourself.

Superior Drummer 3 has deep sampling and is almost a DAW unto itself, since you can program the drums within. I use this most of the time since it's quick and easy. The built-in FX are nice so you don't necessarily need to rely on other plugins. The samples come relatively dry if you want to mix them yourself, but they come with many presets to suit different styles. If you want something with already-mixed and processed presets, Addictive Drums 2 is a great choice. While they are recorded extremely well, they aren't yet mixed, so you will want to do that. Kits are in the 10+ GB range and have many articulations and alternatives (e.g., sticks, mallets, brushes, hotrods). Acoustic/real drums or a drum machine/rack?įor acoustic drums, BFD3 has the deepest sampling.
